What is PRK?

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is a safe and proven laser eye surgery that reshapes the surface of your cornea to correct vision issues like short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. It’s one of the original laser procedures simple, effective, and still widely used today.

How PRK Works

Instead of creating a flap (like in LASIK), PRK gently removes the outer layer of the cornea (the epithelium), then uses a precise laser to reshape the corneal surface underneath. Over a few days, your eye naturally heals and regenerates the surface leading to clear, long lasting vision.

Are You a Candidate for PRK?

  • People with active lifestyles (no flap = less risk in contact sports).
  • Patients with thinner corneas.
  • Those who may not qualify for LASIK or SMILE

Ages 40–45+: PRK can still be a great option, especially if you’re not a candidate for LASIK or SMILE. However, reading vision (presbyopia) may start to shift, and options like monovision or lens-based surgery might also be discussed.

Explanation of

PRK Laser Surgery

This video explains how PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) laser eye surgery is performed using an excimer laser a trusted method for correcting vision by reshaping the surface of the cornea.

You’ll see how, in the first step, the thin outer layer of the cornea (called the epithelium) is gently removed to expose the treatment area. Next, a precise excimer laser is used to reshape the corneal surface, correcting vision issues like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.

After treatment, a special contact lens is placed on the eye to protect it while the surface naturally regenerates over a few days.
